Chapter 4: Vacation with My Nani Maa
Introduction
Chirag and Nandini spend their vacation with Nani Maa, their best friend, who loves stories and puzzles. Through gifts, stamps, a field of radishes and an apple orchard, the chapter builds addition and subtraction up to 100 and a little beyond, using tens frames, the ginladi, number lines, matchstick bundles and box diagrams.
What's in this Chapter
1. The magic trick. Nani Maa knows the total number of marbles, looks at those on the table and says how many are hidden under the handkerchief. If the total is 15 and 12 are on the table, 3 are hidden (total minus what you see).
2. Balushahi and books.
3. Stamps. 15 stamps + 7 more = 22, shown three ways on the ginladi: +1 seven times; +5 then +2; +10 then −3. Nani Maa's brother gives 30 more: 22 + 30 = 52. Of these, 37 show famous persons, so 52 − 37 = 15 show monuments. To reach 75 they need 75 − 52 = 23 more.
4. Number grid game. Roll two dice to make a two-digit number and move forward (or backward) on a 1-100 grid. Nandini at 23 gets 11 and reaches 34 (+10, +1).
5. Magic sums. Rows and columns add up to given totals. In the magic square
2 7 6 / 9 5 1 / 4 3 8
every row, column and diagonal adds up to 15.
6. In the fields.
7. Word problems with box diagrams.
