Chapter 2: Toy Joy
Introduction
Toy Joy is about 3D shapes that children see and use every day. Children make animal and bird faces on old boxes, cans and bottles, build rockets and houses from shapes, and look closely at toys from a toy shop. Along the way they learn the names cube, cuboid, cylinder, cone and sphere, and the words face, edge and corner.
What's in this Chapter
1. Faces on shapes. Children made a pig face on a box (cube), a bird face on a cone ("Look at its pointed beak!"), a puppy face on a bottle (cylinder) and a cat face with long whiskers on a cuboid.
2. Jaya's rocket. Jaya builds a rocket using cubes, cuboids, cones and cylinders. Children count each shape and answer position questions: which shape is between two cuboids, on top of the cylinder, under the cone.
3. Face, edge and corner. A shape has flat or curved faces, straight or curved edges, and corners. Children collect objects to build a house and talk about which parts are straight and which are curved.
4. Devika's toy engine. Devika's toy engine is made of red cylinders, yellow cones, grey cuboids and blue cubes, and children count each part. The book also notes: a cube is a special type of cuboid.
5. Construct and Describe game. In groups, one child joins three shapes and describes the order; the others build the same model without looking.
6. Shape hunt and questions. Find classroom objects shaped like a cylinder, sphere, cube, cuboid or cone, then name shapes:
7. Die and cube models. On a die the faces show 1 to 6 dots. Children find the face opposite 1, 2 and 3 and look for a pattern (opposite faces add up to 7: 1 and 6, 2 and 5, 3 and 4). They also join 3 cubes in different ways and use six dice to make a cuboid and a tower.
