Chapter 10: Fun at Class Party!
Introduction
Fun at Class Party! is a chapter about measuring length. The children of Class 3 are getting ready for a celebration: decorating the board with paper strings, measuring a door, moving a table and making costumes and curtains. Along the way they discover that measuring with hand spans and footsteps can give different answers, and that a common unit, the metre, helps everyone agree.

💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Length can be measured using hand spans, footsteps, strings and ropes.
- ✓Body measures differ from person to person, so a standard unit like the metre is needed.
- ✓A metre rope can be made with a metre rod; folding it gives a half metre and a quarter metre.
- ✓Lengths can be compared indirectly by measuring both with the same string or unit, as with the table and the door.
- ✓Objects can be sorted as more than, less than or equal to one metre.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Let children name every way of measuring in the party picture and use words like hand span, footstep and paper strings.
- →Have two children measure the same desk with hand spans and discuss why the answers differ.
- →Act out the table-and-door problem with a thread so children see indirect comparison.
- →Make a metre rope in class using the book's steps and give each group one.
- →Fold the metre rope to make half and quarter metres and use them for sorting objects.
- →Run the jumping and throwing activities and record who crossed a quarter, half or whole metre.
- →Ask children to estimate before measuring and then check their estimate.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the child explain why Leena and Adi get different hand-span measurements of the same table?
- Can the child identify the longest and shortest strings in a picture and explain how?
- Can the child describe how to make a one-metre rope?
- Can the child sort objects into more than, less than and equal to one metre?
- Can the child show a half metre and a quarter metre by folding a metre rope?
