Chapter 1: What's in a Name?
Introduction
The first chapter of Maths Mela begins with a story, not with numbers. Deba and Deep, two children from a cowherd family in Tarakeshwar, take their cows out to graze every day. One day Deba asks, "How do we know that we have not lost any cows?" They do not know how to count! Their friend gives them a clever idea, and the chapter grows from there into counting letters in names, number names, and sorting things into groups.
What's in this Chapter
1. Keeping track without numbers. The friend says: make a mark on the wall for each cow that leaves the gate, and strike out one mark each time a cow comes back. If all the marks are struck out, every cow is home. One evening two marks are still left and no cows are outside, so Deba and Deep know two cows are missing and go to find them in a nearby field. Children then help their friend Hemant keep track of his 36 cows and 23 sheep with marks.
2. Longest and shortest names. Animals and birds (tiger, snake, dog, lion, goat, elephant, ox, deer, monkey, rat) pick team captains: the one with the most letters leads one team and the one with the fewest letters leads the other. So elephant (8 letters) and ox (2 letters) become captains. Children also compare their friends' names: longest, shortest, same starting letter, same ending letter.
3. Letters in number names. Teji and Jojo use number cards. Teji's roll number 43, "Forty Three", has 10 letters. Jojo's roll number 17, "Seventeen", has 9 letters. The number 56, "Fifty Six", has 8 letters.
4. Fun facts. Venkatanarasimharajuvaripeta in Andhra Pradesh, close to Tamil Nadu, is the place in India with the longest name. Ib in Odisha and Od in Gujarat have the shortest names.
5. Grouping. Teji groups picture cards into "those that eat food" and "those that don't eat food"; Jojo groups the same cards differently. Household objects (TV, lamp, chair, bed, clock, pillow, fan, blanket) are sorted into things that need electricity and things that don't. Children also count hair styles in their class.

Common Mistakes
💡 Key Learning Points
- ✓Things can be tracked by one-to-one matching (a mark for each cow) even without counting.
- ✓Names can be compared by counting their letters: longest name = most letters.
- ✓Numbers have number names; e.g., 'Forty Three' has 10 letters and 'Seventeen' has 9.
- ✓The same set of objects can be grouped in more than one correct way.
- ✓Data about the class (names, hair styles) can be collected and compared.
👨🏫 Teaching Tips
- →Act out the Deba and Deep story: children walk through a 'gate' while a partner makes and strikes marks.
- →Use the classroom attendance: mark each child entering, strike out as they leave for recess.
- →Give each child their name on a strip and line strips up to compare length visually.
- →Use the number cards at the end of the book for the roll-number letter counting.
- →Let pairs create 'Who am I?' number-name puzzles for each other.
- →Collect grouping ideas from children and discuss why each grouping works.
- →Make a class tally of hair styles and ask which is most common.
📋 Assessment Questions
- Can the child explain how marks helped Deba and Deep know if cows were missing?
- Can the child find the longest and shortest names in a list?
- Can the child count the letters in a number name correctly?
- Can the child group objects in at least two different ways and explain each?
