Chapter 9: Which Season is it?

Introduction

Which Season is it? is about time — seasons, months, days, hours and clock time — and also about directions. It opens with a poem about the five seasons of the year, moves to a full-year calendar, follows a family on a trip from Visakhapatnam to Vijayawada, looks at Gargi's day on the clock, and ends with finding East, West, North and South.

What's in this Chapter

  • Poem — Seasons: "Five seasons in a year" — spring ("Flowers bloom, the birds sing"), summer ("with the shining sun and a long day for children to play"), the rainy season ("Peacock dances and the frog hops"), autumn ("Leaves fall on the ground") and winter ("all in snow from head to toe").
  • Let us Discuss: your vacation season, your birthday season and your favourite season. Children match seasons with festivals such as Holi and Baisakhi, Lohri and Christmas, Raksha Bandhan and Janmashtami, Dussehra and Sharad Purnima. The teacher also discusses Hindi names of seasons like Vasant and Shishir, and festivals like Eid that are not seasonal.
  • Calendar Fun (2023 calendar): 31 days in January, March, May, July, August, October and December; 28 days in February; 30 days in April, June, September and November. A week has 7 days. Questions ask about Sundays, vacations and adding the days of March and April (31 + 30 = 61).
  • How Long Does it Take? Match activities with days, hours or months — summer vacation, filling a water tank, cooking, knitting a sweater, a seed growing into a plant, playing, yoga.
  • Trip to Vijayawada: the family leaves Visakhapatnam on 24 November at 8:25 in the morning for a wedding, visits the Manglagiri hills (11:00 morning to 5:00 evening), goes to Kondapalli fort at 9:00 morning with the driver returning after 8 hours, and returns on 28 November by Vande Bharat, which the book calls India's fastest train and the first with an integrated engine, designed in India.
  • Gargi's Day: wakes up at 6 o'clock, draws water at 7 o'clock, goes to school, has lunch, plays, studies and sleeps — children read the short hand (hour hand) and long hand (minute hand), and draw hands for 3, 11, 4, 9, 12 and 6 o'clock.
  • Knowing Direction: a blindfold game using right, left and straight; Sarah's way to school; and a poem — face the rising sun and that is East, behind you is West, left thumb out is North, on your right is South. A compass is a tool for finding direction.
  • Key Ideas

  • A year has seasons, 12 months and 7 days in each week.
  • Months have 28, 30 or 31 days (February has 28 in the 2023 calendar).
  • Some jobs take hours, some days and some months.
  • On a clock, the short hand shows the hour and the long hand shows the minutes.
  • The sun rises in the East; if you face East, West is behind you, North on the left and South on the right.
  • Activities from the Book

  • Reading and acting out the seasons poem.
  • Making a calendar of your birthday month.
  • Drawing clock hands for your study, play and lunch times.

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Read the seasons poem aloud and let children enact it.
    • →Discuss local foods, clothes and festivals of different seasons, and non-seasonal festivals like Eid.
    • →Use a real calendar to count days in months and Sundays in a month.
    • →Talk with children about their travel experiences to build the idea of days and hours.
    • →Use a clock model so children can move the hands themselves.
    • →Play the blindfold direction game using only right, left and straight, with a safe word like 'danger'.
    • →Sing the direction poem with actions facing the rising sun.
