Chapter 7: Rani's Gift

Introduction

Rani's Gift is about measurement — length, height, weight and capacity (how much a container holds). It begins with a story: Raja Jagdeep wants a carved bed for the queen that is 10 handspans long. When it is made, the queen cannot fit; the raja measures only 8 handspans, and someone else counts 14 handspans! Everyone is confused, and the mantri gives a solution. The story shows why we need a common unit to measure.

What's in this Chapter

  • Rani's bed story: different hands give different measures, so the same bed can be 8 or 14 handspans. Children discuss the mantri's solution.
  • Estimate and measure: use your textbook to measure a desk, blackboard and window; first estimate, then find the actual length.
  • Shortest path: help Kavita choose the fastest path to school; choose the longest and shortest paths from A to B and check with a thread.
  • How many blocks? Stack blocks to find the heights of toy animals — giraffe, monkey, elephant.
  • How long is your hand? Trace your hand and count lines; measure a wall, bed and door with an eraser, blocks or a pencil (project work).
  • Pumpkin's Chaupal: vegetables talk about who is heavier or lighter; fill blanks like "Muskmelon is heavier than carrot".
  • Make your own balance with a paper cup, thread and a hanger, and compare an eraser, ball, bead, pencil and crayon. Circle the heaviest and lightest; mark L and H on a balance.
  • Sand and leaves: two same-sized bags, one with sand and one with dry leaves — which is heavier?
  • Fruits in the Park: on a see-saw, how many mangoes balance a watermelon, and how many coconuts if 1 coconut weighs the same as 2 mangoes?
  • Let us make Nimbu Pani: 1 glass needs 1 glass water, 1 spoon sugar, 2 spoons lemon juice and a pinch of salt. For 3 glasses Raghu needs 3 glasses water, 3 spoons sugar, 6 spoons lemon juice and 3 pinches of salt.
  • Find Out: Raghu's bottle holds 4 glasses of water; how many glasses fill your bottle?
  • Project — Jal tarang: fill 5–7 glasses with different water levels and tap them to hear different sounds.
  • Key Ideas

  • We can measure length with handspans, blocks, pencils or books, but results differ unless everyone uses the same unit.
  • Estimating first and then measuring helps us get better at guessing.
  • A balance shows which object is heavier — the heavier side goes down.
  • Bigger is not always heavier: a bag of sand is heavier than a bag of dry leaves of the same size.
  • Containers hold different amounts; we can compare using glasses.
  • Activities from the Book

  • Measuring with a textbook, handspans and blocks.
  • Making a hanger balance.
  • Making nimbu pani and a jal tarang.
  • Words to Learn

  • Length (लंबाई), Height (ऊँचाई)
  • Handspan (बित्ता / बालिश्त)
  • Estimate (अनुमान)
  • Heavy (भारी), Light (हल्का)
  • Balance (तराज़ू)
  • Long / Short (लंबा / छोटा)
  • Capacity (धारिता — कितना भरता है)
  • Tips for Parents & Teachers

  • Measure a table with the child's handspan and your handspan and compare the answers.
  • Make the hanger balance at home and compare fruits.
  • Cook something simple together and talk about how many spoons or cups are used.
  • Discuss the importance of water and not wasting it, as the book suggests.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Thinking a bigger object is always heavier.
  • Leaving gaps or overlaps when measuring with handspans or blocks.
  • Forgetting to multiply every ingredient when making more glasses of nimbu pani.
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓Measure length and height using non-standard units like handspans, blocks and books.
    • ✓Understand why a common unit of measurement is needed.
    • ✓Compare objects as heavier or lighter using a simple balance.
    • ✓Compare how much water different containers hold.
    • ✓Estimate first and then measure to check.

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Read the Rani's bed story aloud and let children discuss the mantri's solution.
    • →Have children measure the same desk with their own handspans and compare results.
    • →Encourage children to verify the longest and shortest path using a thread.
    • →Help children make a balance from a paper cup, thread and hanger.
    • →Encourage students to estimate the weight of objects around them before comparing.
    • →Make nimbu pani in class and scale the recipe for 3 glasses.
    • →Discuss the uses of water and avoiding wastage while doing the jal tarang project.

    📋 Assessment Questions

    1. Can the child explain why the bed measured 8 handspans for one person and 14 for another?
    2. Can the child measure a desk using a textbook and record the result?
    3. Can the child use a balance to say which object is heavier?
    4. Can the child work out the ingredients for 3 glasses of nimbu pani?
