Chapter 6: Decoration for Festival

Introduction

Decoration for Festival teaches addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers through a festival story. Rohan and his friends make garlands of 10 flowers each to decorate their homes. Later we meet Mahi and Isha with blocks, a diya seller, Jyoti with her garlands, and children skipping rope. Children use a ginladi, a number line, blocks and the tens–ones method.

What's in this Chapter

  • Garlands and flowers: Rohan has 1 garland and 2 flowers = 10 + 2 = 12; Suwali has 50 + 3 = 53. Together they have 12 + 53 = 65 flowers. Zoha (20) and Javed (43) together have 63.
  • Adding on the ginladi and number line: count 12 ahead of 25 to get 37. 57 + 34 is done as 57 + 30 + 4: 67, 77, 87, then 91. 24 + 43 = 24 + 40 + 3 = 67. On the number line, 23 + 14 = 37 by jumping +10 and then +4.
  • Playing with Blocks: Mahi has 2 tens 3 ones, Isha has 3 tens 8 ones; together 5 tens 11 ones = 6 tens 1 one = 61. "Shifting the tens": 36 + 47 — ones 6 + 7 = 13 (1 ten 3 ones), tens 3 + 4 + 1 = 8, so 83.
  • Word problems: Rahim's runs (43 + 58), Simarpreet's pencils (12 + 36 = 48), Heena's marbles (34 + 57 = 91), money spent at a fair (₹56 + ₹35 = ₹91), people in a bus (36 + 47 = 83).
  • Let us Count Diyas: 75 diyas made, 35 sold — count back 35 steps from 75 to get 40. 32 − 12 = 20.
  • Subtraction on the number line: 19 − 15 = 4 by jumping back 10 and then 5.
  • Blocks for subtraction: 45 − 12 = 33; 37 − 24 = 13.
  • Decorating with Garlands: Jyoti has 46 flowers (4 garlands and 6 loose) and must give 18. She opens one garland: 3 garlands and 16 flowers; 16 − 8 = 8 and 3 − 1 = 2, so 28 are left. Similarly 54 − 28 = 26.
  • Skip the Rope: Aman skipped 14 times and needs 20: 20 − 14 = 6, or 14 + 6 = 20.
  • Fact families, addition and subtraction pyramids, and Hania and Mansi's Gift: ₹78 in the purse, wrapper ₹24 and ribbons ₹37 — spent ₹61, left ₹17.
  • Project Work: check Daljeet's answers and correct the wrong ones.
  • Key Ideas

  • Add ones first, then tens. If ones make 10 or more, shift one ten to the tens place.
  • To subtract when the ones are not enough, open one ten (1 garland = 10 flowers).
  • Addition and subtraction are linked: 14 + 6 = 20 and 20 − 6 = 14.
  • Subtracting 0 leaves the number the same; subtracting a number from itself gives 0.
  • Activities from the Book

  • Counting forward and back on a ginladi or number line.
  • Using blocks (tens and ones) to add and subtract.
  • Skip the Rope game.
  • Checking Daljeet's work.
  • Words to Learn

  • Add (जोड़ना), Total (कुल)
  • Subtract / Take away (घटाना)
  • Left (बचा हुआ)
  • Garland (माला)
  • Diya (दीया)
  • Regroup / Open a ten (दहाई तोड़ना)
  • Fact family (तथ्य परिवार)
  • Tips for Parents & Teachers

  • Use bundles of 10 sticks: open a bundle when you need more ones.
  • Make shopping sums real with coins and small items.
  • Talk about spending all money (subtract a number from itself) or no money (subtract 0).
  • Ask children to make up their own story sums about festivals.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting to add the carried ten (writing 36 + 47 = 73).
  • Subtracting the smaller digit from the bigger digit in each place (writing 46 − 18 = 32).
  • Mixing up when to add and when to subtract in word problems.
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓Add two-digit numbers with and without regrouping (shifting a ten).
    • ✓Subtract two-digit numbers with and without regrouping (opening a ten).
    • ✓Add and subtract on a ginladi and a number line by jumping in tens and ones.
    • ✓Solve simple word problems about flowers, diyas, money and people.
    • ✓See how addition and subtraction are related through fact families.

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Use real garlands or strings of 10 beads with loose beads to show tens and ones.
    • →Show adding on the number line as one jump of 10 and small jumps of 1.
    • →Use blocks to show why 13 ones become 1 ten and 3 ones.
    • →Act out Jyoti opening a garland when she does not have enough loose flowers.
    • →Discuss subtracting zero and subtracting a number from itself with real-life money examples.
    • →Let children check Daljeet's answers and explain the mistakes.
    • →Play Skip the Rope and write both a subtraction and an addition sentence for the missing skips.
