Chapter 3: Fun with Numbers

Introduction

Fun with Numbers helps children move around numbers up to 100 with confidence. It uses a ginladi (a bead counting frame), a number strip, a number line and a 100 number chart, and it is full of patterns and games. Children learn to count forward, backward and in jumps (skip counting).

What's in this Chapter

  • The Ginladi: children count the beads on the ginladi, write numbers on the blank cards, and place number cards such as 38, 44, 58, 65 and 98 on it.
  • Number strip: a butterfly, a honey bee, a squirrel and a frog move forward and backward on a strip. For example, the squirrel jumps 2 steps back, 5 steps forward and 3 steps back.
  • Guess my Number: one child thinks of a number and others ask yes/no questions, such as "Is it more than 50?", with at most 10 questions.
  • Guess my Place: ants sit on a number line between 20 and 80; children draw an ant on 65 and a sugar cube on 79.
  • Jumpy the frog: patterns such as 1, 4, 7, 10, 13 … (jumps of 3), 40, 45, 50, 55 … (jumps of 5) and 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 (jumps of 10).
  • Skip counting on the number chart: mark skips of 2 and of 5 and find the numbers common to both. Children jump on a number line on the ground to answer questions like "Start from 10 and jump in tens — will you land on 100?" (Yes.)
  • Jumping backward: 10, 9, 8 …; 40, 37, 34 …; 70, 65, 60 …; 100, 90 …; 100, 80 ….
  • Lakshanya's number window: on the 100 chart, the number above is 10 less, the number below is 10 more, the number on the left is 1 less and on the right is 1 more. If the centre is 28, then 18 is above, 38 below, 27 on the left and 29 on the right.
  • Exploring Patterns: growing block patterns 1, 3, 6 … and 1, 4, 9 ….
  • Bingo! Fill a 3 × 4 grid with numbers from 2 to 12, throw two dice and cross the sum.
  • Kikku rabbit jumps on tiles 1, 4, … and his mother jumps 1, 6, 11, …; extend 5, 10, 15 …; 7, 14, 21 …; 1, 7, 13 ….
  • Key Ideas

  • Numbers can be shown on a ginladi, a number strip, a number line and a number chart.
  • Skip counting means counting in equal jumps, like 2s, 5s or 10s.
  • Moving forward adds; moving backward takes away.
  • On a 100 chart: up = 10 less, down = 10 more, left = 1 less, right = 1 more.
  • A pattern follows a rule; once we find the rule we can extend it.
  • Activities from the Book

  • Making a number line on the ground and jumping on it.
  • Guess my Number with yes/no questions.
  • Bingo with two dice.
  • The number window on the 100 chart.
  • Words to Learn

  • Forward (आगे) and Backward (पीछे)
  • Number line (संख्या रेखा)
  • Pattern (पैटर्न / क्रम)
  • Skip counting (उछल गिनती)
  • Before (पहले) and After (बाद में)
  • Common (साझा) — found in both
  • Dice (पासा)
  • Ginladi (गिनलड़ी) — a bead frame for counting
  • Tips for Parents & Teachers

  • Draw a number line with chalk on the floor and let the child jump in 2s, 5s and 10s.
  • Play Guess my Number during a car ride or at dinner.
  • Use a 100 chart at home and play "What is 10 more? What is 1 less?"
  • Let children invent their own patterns with beads or blocks.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Counting the starting number as the first jump on the number line.
  • Mixing up "10 more" (down on the chart) with "1 more" (right on the chart).
  • Continuing a pattern without first checking the rule — e.g. writing 1, 4, 7, 8 instead of 10.
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓Count forward and backward using a ginladi, number strip and number line.
    • ✓Skip count in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s and find numbers common to two skip counts.
    • ✓Find 10 more, 10 less, 1 more and 1 less on a 100 number chart.
    • ✓Recognise and extend number and block patterns.
    • ✓Ask and answer yes/no questions to guess a number logically.

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Make a number line on the ground and let children jump on it in different steps.
    • →Use a ginladi or bead string so children see and touch each number.
    • →Play Guess my Number, limiting children to 10 yes/no questions.
    • →Use the number window on a 100 chart to show 10 more, 10 less, 1 more and 1 less.
    • →Let children develop their own strategy for choosing numbers in Bingo.
    • →Ask children to extend patterns and then make up their own patterns for friends.
    • →Discuss why some jumps land on a number and others do not (e.g. from 4 in twos you never land on 17).

    📋 Assessment Questions

    1. Can the child continue the patterns 1, 4, 7 … and 40, 45, 50 … correctly?
    2. Can the child say the number that is 10 more and 1 less than a given number on the chart?
    3. Can the child place numbers such as 65 and 79 correctly on a number line?
    4. Can the child find numbers common to skip counts of 2 and 5?
    5. Can the child count backward in steps of 5 and 10?
