Chapter 2: Shapes Around Us

Introduction

Shapes Around Us helps Class 2 children notice solid (3D) shapes in things they see every day. It begins with musical instruments — a drum, a matka, a shehnai, a harmonium — and asks which ones look alike. Children then learn about the faces, edges and corners of objects through a story about decorating a gift box.

What's in this Chapter

  • Musical instruments and shapes: children circle instruments shaped like a drum, tick those shaped like a matka, find the shape of a shehnai, and compare how a harmonium is different from a drum. The teacher's note explains that a drum and tabla are played by beating, a guitar and sitar with strings, and a shehnai and flute by blowing air.
  • Match with solid shapes: instruments and objects are matched with a cube, cuboid, cone, cylinder or sphere.
  • Heena and Atif's gift box: they want to decorate a box for a friend's birthday. They put one star on each face — "It has 6 faces so we need 6 stars." They put a ribbon on each edge — they need 12 ribbons, some short and some long. They put pompom balls on the 8 corners.
  • Let us Do / Let us Think: children count how many stars (faces), ribbon stripes (edges) and pompom balls (corners) other shapes would need, and fill a table for cube, cuboid, cone, cylinder and sphere.
  • Touch and Tell — Who am I? A blindfolded child picks an object from clues such as "an object with one corner".
  • Name the objects that have no corners, one corner, three corners and so on.
  • Project Work: make an object with four faces from cardboard, and try to make an object with one face.
  • Key Ideas

  • Things around us have shapes such as cube, cuboid, cylinder, cone and sphere.
  • A face is a flat or curved surface of an object.
  • An edge is where two faces meet.
  • A corner is a point where edges meet.
  • A box (cuboid) has 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 corners; a ball (sphere) has no corners and no edges.
  • Activities from the Book

  • Matching musical instruments with solid shapes.
  • Counting stars, ribbons and pompoms needed to decorate different shapes.
  • The blindfold "Touch and Tell" game.
  • Making shapes with clay or dough that have one, two, three or no corners.
  • Words to Learn

  • Shape (आकार)
  • Face (फलक / सतह)
  • Edge (किनारा)
  • Corner (कोना)
  • Cube (घन) — like a dice
  • Cuboid (घनाभ) — like a chalk box
  • Cylinder (बेलन) — like a drum
  • Cone (शंकु) — like a party cap
  • Sphere (गोला) — like a ball
  • Matka (मटका) — a clay pot
  • Tips for Parents & Teachers

  • Let children touch the surfaces, edges and corners of a chalk box, duster and chalk, as the book suggests.
  • Collect kitchen items (a tin, a ball, a box, an ice-cream cone) and sort them by shape.
  • Wrap a small box and let the child stick one sticker on each face and count them.
  • Talk about local musical instruments and how they are played.
  • Common Mistakes

  • Calling a solid box a "rectangle" — a rectangle is flat; a box is a cuboid.
  • Counting only the faces that can be seen and forgetting the bottom and back faces.
  • Thinking a ball has one corner — a sphere has no corners at all.
  • 💡 Key Learning Points

    • ✓Recognise solid shapes — cube, cuboid, cylinder, cone and sphere — in everyday objects.
    • ✓Find faces, edges and corners of objects by touching and counting.
    • ✓Know that a box has 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 corners.
    • ✓Compare objects by their shapes, e.g. a drum and a harmonium.
    • ✓Sort objects by the number of corners they have.

    👨‍🏫 Teaching Tips

    • →Start with real musical instruments or pictures and ask which ones look alike.
    • →Let children feel the surfaces, edges and corners of a chalk box, duster and chalk.
    • →Act out the gift-box story with a real box, stars, ribbons and pompoms.
    • →Play the blindfold Touch and Tell game with objects of different shapes.
    • →Ask children to make shapes with clay or dough that have one, two, three or no corners.
    • →Discuss locally available instruments and how they are played — beating, strings or blowing.
    • →Use the project work: make a four-faced object from a cardboard sheet.

    📋 Assessment Questions

    3. Can the child name objects with no corners and with one corner?
    4. Can the child explain how a drum is different in shape from a harmonium?
