Chapter 10: Fun at the Fair

Introduction

Fun at the Fair is about money. Rupal goes to the local fair with her friends; her mother gives her ₹50 and she spends most of it on rides. Through the fair, the chapter teaches children to add and subtract money, recognise Indian notes and coins, and make amounts in different ways.

What's in this Chapter

  • How much Rupal spent: children add the cost of her rides, then find the money left: money given − money spent = money left.
  • A friend's way: a friend has ₹8 left out of ₹50. She counts up: ₹8 left + ₹20 on rides = ₹28, + ₹20 on snacks = ₹48, + ₹2 on candies = ₹50. So she spent ₹42. Then: if you had ₹3 left from ₹40, how much did you spend? (₹37)
  • Tickets for rides: find the money needed for 2 tickets at ₹20 or the number of ₹10 tickets for ₹30.
  • Indian currency: notes of ₹100, ₹200 and ₹500. Children count how many times 500 is written on a ₹500 note and find the monument printed on it. The teacher discusses the lines on the border of notes that help specially abled people.
  • Old coins: Tejal's grandmother shows 10, 20, 25 and 50 paise coins. 100 paise = 1 rupee, so 2 coins of 50 paise make ₹1, 4 coins of 25 paise make ₹1 and 5 coins of 20 paise make ₹1.
  • Pop the Balloon: Matru gets 3 chances for ₹10; children find winnings for different coloured balloons and plan how to win ₹17, ₹22 and ₹31.
  • Different ways to pay: ₹66 and ₹54, ₹85 are made with ₹1, ₹2, ₹5, ₹10, ₹20 and ₹50.
  • Let us Buy: find the money needed for items, money you have, and money left or more money needed.
  • Let us Do: ₹18 + ₹32, ₹15 + ₹27, ₹47 + ₹50, ₹22 + ₹35; Jayant spends ₹25 and ₹40 (₹65); Kanika has ₹14 more than Meera's ₹43 (₹57); bread ₹30 and chocolate ₹60 (₹90); Ajay has ₹58 and spends ₹48 (₹10 left). The book also asks, "Have you seen that sometimes we pay using mobile phones?"
  • Project Work: list what your family buys at the market and the total money spent. The teacher also talks about the value of saving money.
